According to Wikipedia, an UFO or "Unidentified Flying Object" is an "(...) any real or apparent flying object which cannot be identified by the observer and which remains unidentified after investigation".

Reports of unusual aerial phenomena date back to ancient times, in fact there are even lots of ancient UFO pictures and paintings, but larger numbers of UFO photographies only appeared in the late 1940s. This page covers both ancient UFO pictures and later UFO photographies.

People claim to have seen quite different types of UFOs: most times they are saucer shaped (that's why they're sometimes called "flying saucers"), but sometimes they are also reported to be triangle shaped or they look completely different.
