November 19, 2007
by joskirps

1. Gene Roddenberry originally conceived Spock's skin color to be red, but this was rejected Nimoy's colored face almost appeared as black on black-and-white televisions in the 1960's.

2. The "Vulcan salute" was improvised by Leonard Nimoy, using a version of a traditional Jewish religious hand gesture as a distinctive Vulcan greeting.

3. Leonard Nimoy's father was a barber - youngsters often came into the shop asking for a "Mr. Spock" haircut, never realizing that "Mr. Spock's dad" was cutting their hair.

4. Spock is the only character to appear in every episode of the series. Leonard Nimoy and Majel Barrett are the only actors to appear in both the first and last episodes.

5. Spock's farewell remark "Live long and prosper" was ranked #5 in TV Guide's list of "TV's 20 Top Catchphrases".

6. Actor Mark Leonard, best known for his role as Spock's father, was only six years older then Leonard Nimoy (Spock) himself.

7. Martin Landau was originally offered the role of Spock, but declined. Other actors that may have gotten the role were George Lindsey and DeForest Kelley.

8. During the 1966 Star Trek promo in magazines, all shots of Spock's pointed eyebrows and ears where airbrushed out of the pictures because NBC thought that no one would watch the show due to Spock's resemblance to the Devil.

9. In the original rejected pilot entitled "The Cage", Mr. Spock was played as much more emotional and "human".

10. Leonard Nimoy's makeup had a faint greenish hue to it, because of his green Vulcan blood.

Spock is a character in the fictional Star Trek media franchise.[640-863] First portrayed by Leonard Nimoy in the original Star Trek series, Spock also appears in the animated Star Trek series, two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, seven of the Star Trek feature films, and numerous Star Trek books, comics, and video games.[640-822] In the 2009 film Star Trek, Nimoy reprised his role alongside Zachary Quinto, who played a younger alternate-timeline version of the character. Spock is the son of Vulcan ambassador Sarek (originally played by Mark Lenard) and human Amanda Grayson (originally played by Jane Wyatt).[1] The relationship between Spock and Sarek often is turbulent, although rooted in an underlying respect and carefully restrained love for each other.[642-072] Their falling out began when Spock declined an offer to study at the prestigious Vulcan Science Academy and instead joined Starfleet against his father's wishes.
