A Short History Of The Sci-fi Channel

January 17, 2008
by joskirps

Sci-Fi (originally The Sci-Fi Channel) is a television channel specializing in science fiction, fantasy, horror, and paranormal series, movies and documentaries. It was originally launched in 1991, today it's headquartered in New York City and owned by NBC.

In the beginning SciFi offered older science fiction television series such as Dark Shadows and Flash Gordon as well as science fiction and fantasy movies. In 1992 they were acquired by USA Network, famous science fiction authors such as Gene Roddenberry ("Star Trek") and Isaac Asimov ("The Foundation Series") were hired as advisors and the original Star Trek series as well as older horror movies (Dracula, Frankenstein...) were shown.

During the 1990s Sci-Fi also showed anime science fiction movies and series such as Robot Carnival, Akira and Tenchi Muyo as part of the "Saturday Morning Anime" show, although most animes were edited, any nudity being blurred or cropped out. Currently animes are returning to the channel.

From 1997 to 2004 SciFi changed its owner numerous time, until they ended up as part of the NBC network in 2004. In 2003 they gained a lot of prominence with the "Taken" series by Steven Spielberg. Today their most successful science fiction series include Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. But they also show cult-status series such as Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Doctor Who.

In 1995 the Sci-Fi channel's launched their website (originally called "The Dominion", a name dropped in 2000) which can be considered to have been one of the first larger sites on the web, it covers mainly science fiction, space and fantasy subjects and won a large number of awards. SCIFIpedia.com, which is part of the scifi.com network, is a special interest wiki covering mainly science fiction subjects.
