Earn $20 Million By Sending Your Own Spacecraft To The Moon

March 06, 2008
by joskirps

The Google Lunar X PRIZE (aka Moon 2. 0) is a space competition sponsored by Google. It's goal is to inspire private investors to develop new technologies and materials that may help to explore the moon in a near future.

Google, Moon, ExploreTo win the first prize (that's $20 million!) you will have to be the first one to successfully launch, land and operate a rover on the lunar surface over a distance of at least 500 meters and to transmit high definition images and video back to the Earth - and this before December 31, 2012.

Initially NASA was planned to sponsor the competition, but in this case only teams from the United States would have been able to participate. After budget setbacks NASA dropped their support and finally Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin agreed to sponsor the competition.

Today there are already ten officially registered Google Lunar X Prize teams taking part in the competition, and more are expected to join soon.
