The commando raid

June 30, 2008
by glencoe

It was the night of the 54th of zank, six hundred men were lined up with an officer facing them “Any man here can step down now, with no stain on their character.” Not one of them did.

They were going on a mission to destroyed the Dacor fuel station at Selos. The plan was risky and bold, they would board a battleship to get them to the system then they would land on the planet destroyed the fuel dump, then go around blowing anything of importance up, meet back at the space port where a fleet of rusting ships would get them back out.

As the ships took of the men were decidedly happy, they played games and joked about the plan, saying it would be a walk through. but in fact the six hundred Mananin commandos were out numbered fifty to one by the Dacor marines.

As they approached the system they started to broadcast a captured Dacor code, this meant they got to the planet’s atmosphere before the Dacor opened fire. When they did though all hell broke loose, plasma fire, ripped the deck to bits, laser bursts killed the captain and one of the commandos had to take the bridge, missiles, and bits of shrapnel went flying over the deck. One gunner of the ship had been hit sixteen times and was still firing his gun at the enemy.

When they finally landed a maze of plasma and lasers crisscrossed the air, the ship was ablaze and the commandos had to jump of on to the ground before she exploded. The Mananin commandos split into ground of twenty and went after their objectives, the primary objective was the fuel dump, it was heavily defended and the commandoes took almost three hours before they captured it and laid the explosives. The men got out with only seconds to spare and the fuel exploded in a huge fire ball, lighting up the night sky. Several other targets were taken out with success.

The commandos, now only four hundred and fifty strong met up at a bridge and found to their dismay, that it was the only route back to the ships that would extract them. On the other side were five hundred Dacor marines all armed with auto laser rifles. The Mananin commandos formed into a bunch and ran across the bridge firing in a mass, the Dacor on the other side had not been expecting this and had little time to fire, and were soon cut down. When the commandos reached the extraction point they watched in horror as they saw the burning ships that should have taken them home. One of the men said, “well we can’t get out so lets do some damage while we’re here.” The commandos fought on for four more days before giving up to the Dacor.

Every last man who fought on that day received the Mananins highest honour, the steel claw, of the sixhundred marines who fought that day three hundred died, forty four, stole a Dacor ship and managed to slip away, the rest were taken into captivity by the Dacor until the end of the war.
